Minister Eurlings welcomes Garuda

Nieuwsbericht | 02-06-2010

Garuda has resumed its regular service to the Netherlands. This morning, one of the Indonesian airline’s aircraft landed at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol again, the first one after a six-year interruption. The aircraft was greeted with a festive splash of water cannons.

Minister Eurlings welcomed the plane together with his Indonesian counterpart Mr Numberi. KLM’s President and CEO Hartman, Schiphol Airport’s President Jos Nijhuis and the Indonesian Ambassadors in the Netherlands and Germany also attended.

Garuda is going to run a daily service between Jakarta and Amsterdam. Minister Eurlings commended the airline for the manner in which it managed to secure a position in international aviation once again. ‘The Republic of Indonesia can be proud of Garuda, just like the Netherlands is proud of KLM. From now on, Garuda will have a daily stop once more at Schiphol airport, the gateway to Europe,’ said Minister Eurlings.

Traditionally, the ties between the Netherlands and Indonesia have been strong. In recent years, the Dutch government and KLM have been providing the Indonesian government with technical assistance in order to raise the quality provided by Garuda to the desired level again. In this regard, the Netherlands has convinced the European Union that safety is a top priority for Indonesia and the Indonesian airlines.
