Why a Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis?

There is a need within transport policy for systematic, well-founded studies and analyses that are not swayed by the political issues of the day. The objective of KiM is therefore to strengthening the strategic knowledge base for transport policy.


What does the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis do?

KiM provides empirical studies and analyses to inform and test policy. The unit informs policy by analysing trends and developments and the associated effects on transport policy and by developing future scenarios and making prognoses. The unit also tests the effectiveness and suitability of policy instruments and groups of instruments in the light of trends, prognoses and policy objectives.


Which products can I expect from the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis?

The work of the institute is largely demand-driven, and is based on a work programme that is determined on an annual basis in consultation with the policy Directorate-Generals. KiM products include studies, trend analyses, income and expenditure analyses, and international and cross-sector comparative research. In the future KiM will also provide products reflecting transport policy. The institute is focused on areas such as the interpretation and combination of existing research.


What is the position of the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis?

The institute maintains an independent position within the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and falls directly under the Secretary-General.


Why is KiM part of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management?

KiM makes a considerable contribution to the development of knowledge on transport policy. As this requires close ties with the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, KiM is best positioned within the Ministry.


What is the role of the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis with regard to the policy Directorate-Generals and the Inspectorate?

The Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis is clearly not meant to take over the role of the policy Directorate-Generals or the Inspectorate. The new institute is concerned with knowledge rather than policy development or strategy formulation. It is up to the policy Directorate-Generals to turn this knowledge into policy strategies. KiM seeks to inform the policy Directorate-Generals.
