KiM: Policy studies and analysis
About KiM
The Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis (KiM) draws up independent, academic studies and analyses for medium and long-term transport policy.
Tasks and procedures
KiM is oriented towards all forms of transport: passenger and goods transport by road, rail, water and air. KiM delivers:
- An annual status report showing demands on transport and the capacity of infrastructure and transport services, including the effects on accessibility, the economy, safety, the environment and spatial planning;
- Studies (including future studies) and scenario analyses;
- Policy evaluation of large projects and policy programmes;
- Analyses of the influence of social developments on the transport market, the needs and preferences of people and companies in the field of transport, public interests and ways of securing them, etc.;
- New programmes for collaborating with other governments and businesses.
In addition to research reports, KiM provides second opinions in the form of reports, policy documents and verbal recommendations. KiM carries out most of the research and analyses itself. On a number of projects the institute works together with planning offices, universities, and the Transport Research Centre of the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat Adviesdienst Verkeer en Vervoer). KiM also outsources research to private parties.
All KiM products are public. Reports are published within three months of research being completed. There are some exceptions to this rule, for example when research forms part of large policy document preparations, in which case relevant research reports are published together with the policy document.
