Mobility and accessibility
The Dutch are increasingly on the move, for work as well as for recreation. Mobility is essential for the economy and one’s social life. The problem is that due to the growth in the number of travellers and goods transport, the Netherlands is in danger of getting jammed on the roads and in public transport. Preferably, travellers want to move from door to door quickly and safely, without delays and most importantly without irritations. We wish for a road network and public transport system that is pleasant and environmentally friendly to use. But it must also be robust so that, for example, you do not arrive hours late for work due to a lorry that has tipped over.
Achieving this within a few years is not feasible because it requires significant improvements in the road network and public transport system. It is, however, the long-term goal (2028). In the years ahead, I&M will be working on a mobility system that is user friendly and offers travellers and transport companies the choice of an attractive mode of transport. A mobility system that can withstand a blow. The files below outline how I&M is planning to realise such a system.
Travellers themselves have an important role to play. They should feel invited to make conscious choices; to avoid peak hours and choose between the car and public transport. The business community is working on this by introducing flexible working hours.
